Mary Simms – Personal Injury Lawyer

Lawyer at Badre Law

Professional Overview

With more than 20 years of experience in Ontario, I focus my practice on helping injured people and their families through some of the most difficult moments of their lives. My core areas of practice include motor vehicle collisions, municipal liability and infrastructure claims, catastrophic injury, and long-term disability claims.

My career has spanned both sides of the courtroom. For 12 years I acted as defence counsel for a major municipality, and earlier in my career I practiced at leading Bay Street law firms. Over the years I have appeared at all levels of the Ontario courts, before numerous administrative tribunals, and served as commission counsel at a public inquiry. That background — built on defending institutional clients — gives me a firsthand understanding of how insurers, municipalities, and opposing counsel evaluate a claim, build a strategy, and approach settlement. I now bring that insight to the plaintiff side, representing individuals and families.

Languages: English.

My Approach

I believe in vigorous advocacy delivered with professionalism and mutual respect. Cases are won not only through forceful argument, but through preparation, credibility, and a clear-eyed understanding of how the other side is thinking. Having spent years on the defence side, I can anticipate the arguments an insurer or institution is likely to make — and prepare my clients’ cases accordingly.

I also understand that most of my clients are navigating this process for the first time in their lives, and that a legal claim is only one part of what they are dealing with. My role is to guide them through it with honesty, clear communication, and a relationship built on trust.

Outside the Office

I am committed to giving back to the community that I serve. I sit on the boards of organizations supporting supportive housing, a women’s second-stage shelter, and families affected by childhood cancer.

What Shaped My Career

The turning point in my career came from spending so many years on the other side of these cases. For over a decade I defended a major municipality, and before that I practiced at Bay Street firms. I sat in rooms where claims were evaluated, reserves were set, and settlements were negotiated — and I saw, up close, how differently a file looks depending on which side of the table you are on.

What I came to realize was that the strength of a claim is not just about the facts of the accident. It is about how those facts are assembled, presented, and anticipated before opposing counsel ever sets a strategy. That is the insight I wanted to put to work for the people who actually need it: individuals and families who are dealing with an injury for the first time and have no idea how the other side is thinking.

So I made the deliberate choice to return to plaintiff-side advocacy. I have never regretted it. It is the combination of that defence-side perspective and a genuine belief that everyone deserves vigorous, honest representation that defines the way I practise law today.
